If Mistral AI isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with Mistral AI:

  1. Le Chat has a new name

    Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe; your account, plan and conversations moved over automatically. It still lives at chat.mistral.ai, so an unfamiliar interface is not an outage.

  2. 429 means a rate limit, not downtime

    The API returns 429 Too Many Requests when you exceed your organization’s requests-per-second or token limits. Check your usage and limits in the console and watch the rate-limit headers on responses. Limits rise with your billed usage tier.

  3. Retry 5xx errors with backoff

    Mistral’s docs list 500, 502, 503 and 504 as server errors and recommend exponential backoff for these and for 429; the official SDKs retry this way automatically. If 5xx errors persist across models, check the status page.

  4. 401 Unauthorized

    A 401 means the API key is missing, wrong or not valid for the API you’re calling. Make sure you’re using a key created in the console for API access, and that it hasn’t been revoked.

  5. Chat not loading in the browser

    Sign out of chat.mistral.ai, clear cookies and cache for mistral.ai, and sign back in, or try a private window. Also try the mobile app. If both fail, check the status page and user reports.

Is Mistral’s chat down or just the API?

They’re separate products and can fail independently: the chat app lives at chat.mistral.ai, while developers call the API with keys from Mistral AI Studio. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports.

What happened to Le Chat?

Le Chat was renamed Vibe. It keeps your conversations and plan, and the address is still chat.mistral.ai.

Why am I getting 429 errors from the Mistral API?

You’ve exceeded one of your organization’s limits, such as requests per second or tokens per minute. Free-tier limits are the lowest and meant for testing; limits go up as your billed usage grows.

Where does Mistral run its API?

Mistral’s platform runs from EU data centres by default, and some models may have limited regional availability. For region-specific incidents, check the official status page.
